The Scoop
Star Frontiers was made by TSR, the same company that brought the world Dungeons and Dragons. However this early foray into Sci-fi role playing games had some major differences when compared to D&D. For starters there was no leveling up of characters. You were given a set amount of health but you could buy skill points with the experience points gained. The game system also ran on a percentile system. A player would role two ten sided dice, 2d10 for those in the know. The role would result in a number from 1-100.

The Scoop
The Mobile Strike Force Team, a G.I. Joe fan club. I would have loved to join this as a kid. Never did. Maybe it was because I lived in Canada. Or maybe the fact that most of the comics I read at the time were DC seventies titles my mom would bring home form the quarter bins. Anyway, below are images of the some of the things you would get when you joined the Mobile Strike Force Team. All images are borrowed from www.yojoe.com, a great site for all things G.I. Joe.

"What a Space Cadet". Can't argue there. Who knew there were Valley Girls in Space."Awesome", "Gnarly", "Like- Can I drive?" Actually that would make a good movie, or at least it would have made a good movie 25 years ago. I just checked IMDB and there has not been a movie made about Valley Girls in Space. There was a however a "Space Girls in Beverly Hills" made and a "Dinosaur Valley Girls" too. Both look premium. Anyway, Solar Fox is a game I am not familiar with, heck I didn't even know CBS got into the video game market in the eighties.

I was down in Seattle this weekend and I stopped by the EMP museum. They currently have a Battlestar Galactica exhibit that features life-size replica Viper and Cylon Raider ships, along with various props and costumes. It's a small exhibit but was a nice bonus for any BSG fan. For me the main draw to the EMP was the Nirvana exhibit. If you ever get the chance, make sure to check out the museum. This was my third time there and it is always worth a couple hours of time to check it out. The permanent exhibits are worth it alone. I mean can you ever see this piece of Rock and Roll history enough?

House Ads - The 1980's - Charlton Ditko

I've been thinking about Steve Ditko lately. I recently watched the great documentary "In Search of Steve Ditko" by Jonathan Ross. This in turn lead me to buying the Amazing Spider-Man Masterworks Vol. 1 as well as Ditko's Mr. A comic. Steve Ditko is the comic world's JD Salinger, but where they differ, at least I think they differ is in their motives for becoming recluses. To be fair Ditko never did completely drop out of sight and his work can still be found in various comics since leaving Spider-Man (the character he co-created with Stan Lee) and Marvel back in the sixties. He did a productive stint at DC creating Hawk and Dove and the Creeper amongst others things followed by work at Charlton Comics before returning to DC to create Shade, the Changing Man.

Ditko later did work with Jim Shooter's start-up company Valiant working on the companies WWF wrestling comic. Shooter recently talked about this period over at his blog.

The most interesting thing I've read about Steve Ditko was his requirements for accepting work on comics.  He believed in the true hero. No gray areas here. The hero must be good. It's black and white and he expressed these ideas as far back as his Mr. A comic. You will never see a Ditko penciled Punisher story. Ditko was profoundly influenced by Ayn Rand and her philosophy of Objectivism...

"My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute." - Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged
