Format change in the new year

Happy New Years everyone. I will be changing the release dates for new blog posts to Tuesdays and Thursdays. I hope you have enjoyed the adverts I've posted in the past year. My goal is to construct a repository of sorts for all comic book adverts...or at least most of them. See you all on Tuesday.

The 100th post...another Superbaby tale.

This is the 100th post on Four Color Promises. To celebrate I am throwing you another tale of Superbaby. It's the story "Little Green Men Who Weren't There." This story was the back-up story in Superboy (v2) # 24 from 1981. Written by Bob Rozakis, pencilled by John Calnan and inked by Frank McLaughlin. All rights and trademarks own by DC comics.

Not an ad but...A Joe Eisma commision

I recently started collecting original comic art. I've also been really enjoying Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma's ongoing series from Image called Morning Glories. It's a great book and Eisma's art is pretty cool. So I decided to get a commission done of two of the evil characters from the book. Here you have Miss Daramont and the school nurse. I pretty happy with how it turned out and I wanted to share it with you all.

Not an ad but...A tale of Superbaby

Here's a Sunday treat, a tale of Superbaby. Ridiculous I know, but I used to love coming across a story featuring Superbaby when I was a kid. A friend of mine said he always disliked these stories because of the way Superbaby talked. He would said me instead of I'm. For example, take a look at the first page...and I quote,

"Oh-oh! Me afraid this would happen! Now mommy and daddy find out my big secret!" 

I was never as much of a discerning reader as my friend I guess. Now I just find it silly. Anyway, from 1972 comes the story "Superbaby's new family". Written by Leo Dorfman, pencilled by Bob Brown and inked by Murphy Anderson. All rights, images etc owned by DC Comics. As always, just click the page to enlarge.

Not an ad but...A map of Smallville

I found this map as the centerfold in The New Adventures of Superboy (Vol. 2) No. 22. I thought it was kinda of cool and worth sharing. What surprised me was how close Gotham City and Metropolis are to each other.

Not an ad but #3... A New Blog!

Today I launched a new blog called A Flame About This High, that will look at John Byrne's letter column from the pages of John Byrne's Next Men (JBNM). The letters column of JBNM were an interesting look into the mind of the controversial John Byrne and a look into the comic book industry in the early nineties.

The site will be updated every Friday with scans of the original letters column being posted and a discussion of the contents.

I returned from the Emerald City Comic Convention today. This is by far one of the coolest comics I bought. Come on...Super-Gorillas!

Not an ad but...

Okay, so this is not an advert but I wanted to share it nonetheless. I found this while digging through my long-boxes looking for some issues to bring down to the Emerald City Comic Con to get signed next weekend.

I know you recognize the cover but do you know the language? It's Hungarian! I found this issue and another one (with the cover of Uncanny X-men 201 plus 205) at a flea market in Budapest in the winter of 1999. I thought it was too cool to pass up so I bought for less than a dollar and proceeded to carry the comic in my backpack for the next few months.

This issue contains Uncanny X-men # 137 as well as Phoenix the Untold story. It also contains no ads and the cover is made of card-stock. Interesting. Happy Sunday!
